Birth & Death Certificates

Important Information
  • Certified birth certificates can be obtained from our Department for all Washington State births registered from July 1, 1907 to present.
  • Certified death certificates can be obtained from our Department for deaths occurring in Whatcom County from 1989 to present.
  • For vital records outside of Washington State, contact www.vitalchek.com.

APPLY ONLINE:

You may choose to have us mail your certificate to you or pick it up at the Health Department.  Certificates will be issued on the business day following receipt of payment and application unless the request is for a newborn certificate (please allow three weeks for issuance).  A convenience fee of 2.35% (minimum $2) applies to all online payments - only enter the amount due per certificate as the convenience fee is automatically added.

 BY MAIL OR IN PERSON:

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. only, you may apply for a birth or death certificate and receive it while you wait unless the request is for a newborn certificate (please allow three weeks from the date of birth for issuance).

Applications received in person by 11:30 AM will be available by 2:00 PM on the same business day and applications received after 11:30 AM will be available by 9:00 AM on the following business day unless the request is for a newborn certificate (please allow three weeks for issuance).

2. Mail the completed application along with a check or money order made out to Vital Records OR bring the completed application to 509 Girard Street - Bellingham, WA  98225.  Once application and payment are received, we will mail your certificate on the following business day unless the request is for a newborn certificate (please allow three weeks for issuance).

Fees
  1. Certified Birth & Death Certificates are $20.00 each, effective July 22, 2007.  Payable in US dollars only.
  2. Note:  If we are unable to find your record, you will be charged an $8.00 fee for the search, per RCW 70.58.107.
  3. There is a minimum convenience fee of $2.00 to a maximum of 2.35% on debit and credit card orders.
