Things to Know
You need a CPL if you
- Carry a pistol concealed on your person.
- Carry or place a loaded pistol in a vehicle.
You can apply at the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) if you
- Live in unincorporated Whatcom County.
- Live outside of Washington.
- Live within city limits - apply at your local police department.
Your CPL is valid for five (5) years

CPL Processing
- WCSO may take up to thirty (30) days to process your CPL application.
- WCSO sends your approved CPL by US mail.
- If denied, WCSO sends a letter to you by US mail.
Your application can be denied for a CPL if you
- Have been convicted of a felony and your firearms rights have not been restored.
- Have a CPL in a revoked status.
- Are subject to a court order or injunction concerning the possession of firearms.
- Are free on bond or personal recognizance while awaiting trial, appeal, or sentencing for a felony offense.
- Have an outstanding warrant for your arrest for a felony or misdemeanor.
- Have been ordered to forfeit a firearm within one year before applying for a CPL.
