Current development projects at Lake Whatcom Park consist of both trail development and trailhead improvements. Trail development is near completion, with construction of new trails ongoing since 2017. Trailhead improvements are at the beginning of the planning phase, with early conceptual design options being developed.
Approximately 4.25 miles of new hiking-only trail will be constructed connecting the Chanterelle and Hertz trails in the park. Climbing more than 2,000 feet of elevation, this connection will create a looped trail experience for hikers.
Trail construction will begin June of 2022 with an anticipated completion by Spring of 2023
Trail Head Improvements
Parks has contracted with MacLeod Reckord for inventory, design and planning assistance for improvements to the park’s trailheads. This design project will help inform future decisions and improvements to address the following:
Additional parking for visitors and reduction of vehicle parking along North Shore Road
Improved traffic and pedestrian flow in the park
Connectivity between the Chanterelle and Hertz trailheads
