Status
The Whatcom County Flood Control Zone District (FCZD) is designing an improved levee system south of downtown Ferndale. Initial work will include performing field surveys in the fall and winter of 2020/2021 and evaluating design alternatives. A public meeting will be held in the future to discuss design alternatives.
Project Benefits
- Provide reliable flood protection
- Improve habitat, stormwater treatment, and recreational opportunities
Background
The current levee system on the Nooksack River does not provide reliable flood protection to critical infrastructure in the Ferndale Area including: two water and one wastewater treatment plants, roads, parks, residences, and farmland.
Project Description
The proposed project will extend south of the intersection of Front Avenue and Cherry Street for approximately one mile.
Engineering Design
Reichhardt and Ebe Engineering is the lead consultant working on design.
Funding
A Floodplains by Design grant through the Washington State Department of Ecology is providing the majority of the funding for this project.
